Save hundreds of millions of electricity costs through Green IT

Every year, FPT may reduce hundreds of millions on electricity thanks to the application of energy saving measures into Informatics appliances at FPT Cau Giay Building and Data Center under FPT Telecom.

In July 2011, Specialists from Panasonic, IDC Frontier and NEC carried on experiment, consultancy for FPT Group of power-saving measures for FPT Building at Cau Giay and Data Center. Since October 2011, FPT have applied those measures and gained many positive results.

The application of energy saving measures, according to Panasonic’s consultancy, may help FPT Cau Giay Building save 10-20% electricity costs. Meanwhile, Data Center – under FPT Telecom also reduce electricity bill by 300 million by dint of advice of IDC Frontier and NEC. This is a typical example of Green IT application publised in order to share experience with other orgazations and enterprises in Viet Nam.
FPT Building has been selected to be one of the two trials of Green IT application in order to save power. This office building has been put to use since 2007 with its capacity at 3000 students and 300 intern ones. The annual average of electricity consumtion is 5 mllion kWh per year.

The FPT’s Building management said that FPT has applied power-saving policies according to Panasonic’s requirement. Firstly, they adjusted the working-time of ventilation system from 7a.m-6p.m to 7.30a.m – 5.30 p.m. Then, they reinstalled the CO2 concentration of all floors according to Japan standard of 1000 ppm instead of 250 pm as usual; and adjusted AHU and PAU temperature from 24 to 25,5 degree.

Moreover, the FPT Cau Giay Building also minimizes the lighting in public areas such as corridors and elevator areas on either side. Panasonic said that’s FPT could cut off 341.200 kWh of power consumption, with air conditioning comsumption reduced at 144,100 kWh and lighting at 197,100 kWh. It meant electricity would be cut nearly 500 million/year if provided in cash. “FPT is expected to spend over VND 1,1 billion on the change of ventilation and lighting system; however, the amount of VND 500 million per year could be saved only after 2,4 years, which possibly reimbursed for the above investment.”- said Mr. Trung

The second note is the application of Green IT in Data Center of the FPT Telecom International Company (FTI, under FPT Telecom). Two Japan companies - IDC Frontier and NEC - have conducted surveys in Data Center and offices of FPT Telecom.

According to the advice of Frontier IDC, FTI was using shield called Blanking Panel (attached to the front of the rack to cover the gaps in the cabinet) and adjusted the amount of air conditioniner to reduce power consumption. It is estimated that FTI would reduce power consumption by approximately 255,000 kWh per year, while reducing 140 tons of CO2, equivalent to savings of 300 million.

Now, FPT Telecom Company is also building processes and regulations on energy-saving in the office as proposed by NEC. According to Mr. Ha, this year, FPT Telecom will expand Data Center in Cau Giay and the company will fully apply the energy saving solutions at the beginning at IDC Frontier in order to get the best performance.
